With video views online skyrocketing, everybody now wants to post more videos up on their blog or website. In many cases, videos shot on a phone can look just fine on a blog post or even a website header. The problem is that when you download them from your phone they often come in as M4V files, which many content management systems (including WordPress) won’t accept, and which you can’t edit in programs like iMovie.
The best solution is generally to convert your M4V files to MP4. You’ll find tons of articles online about how to do this. They suggest all kinds of plugins and downloads of conversion programs for the job. But I’ve found it’s incredibly simple to do the conversion with no gizmos whatever.
All you have to do is get your video from your phone onto your computer. Once there, click on the file and hold your left click down until the name of the file is highlighted in a little box, which means you are now able to change the file name.
Then all you have to do is change the extension name at the end of the file from filename.m4v to filename.mp4. It’s as simple as that, or at least it has been for me. After this basic change I’ve found I can upload videos to my WordPress sites or edit them in several programs.
